Ambassador Farooq Sobhan is the President and CEO of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI), an independent think tank established on 1st October, 2000. Mr. Sobhan is a leading expert on South Asian regional integration and cooperation. Mr. Sobhan has served as the Executive Chairman, Board of Investment (BOI) and Special Envoy to the Prime Minister 1997-1999 and Foreign Secretary 1995-1997. He visited Washington and the United Nations in New York in May 2007 as the Special Envoy of the Caretaker Government, with the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister. He has also served as the Chairman of the Group of 77 at the UN 1982-1983, Chairman of the UN Commission on TNCs 1991-1992. During his 33 years in the diplomatic service he served as an Ambassador / High Commissioner to Malaysia, China, India and the United Nations in New York.

Mr. Sobhan was instrumental in the establishment of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Foundation, a public-private undertaking to oversee the development of SMEs in Bangladesh. He served on the SME Foundation Board during 2007-2009.He is currently a member on the Board of IDLC, the largest non- banking financial institution in the country. Mr. Sobhan also helped in the establishment of the Centre for CSR in September 2007 and has been serving as the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the CSR Centre.
